One of the most important resources on Earth, our fantastic web of biodiversity - from fungus and ferns to amoebas and molluscs - provides a wide range of services and resources that directly support human health, societies and economies; bringing immense, and in some cases incalculable, value and benefits for humanity.Organized by the Oman Animal and Plant Genetic Resources Center (OAPGRC) and supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) the inaugural GenoBusiness Forum will take place 8 - 9 May 2018 at the Public Authority for Civil Aviation in Muscat. This important initiative will bring together local and international experts to explore the social, economic and environmental importance of Oman’s rich and diversified genetic resources, their conservation, and the green and sustainable commercial opportunities they offer.
The enormous cultural and historical value of local genetic resources teaches us how our forefathers lived and progressed. Indeed, the conservation and use of genetic resources is an ancient practice begun by the generations that came before us. Since time immemorial, farmers have chosen seed for future planting, domesticated wild animals and plants, and selected and bred them to meet their needs. As a result, over the years hundreds of different species have been domesticated and within each species, human and natural selection have combined to produce innumerable varieties. In parallel with the Forum, OAPGRC will also organize a two-day Exhibition designed to showcase companies that are leveraging genetic resources to produce eco-friendly products. Participation at the Exhibition is free-of-charge. If you are working in in the food and beverage, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, fragrance, handicrafts or medical sectors and would like to display your products then contact Faiza Al Siyabi on Faiza.AlSiyabi@oapgrc.gov.om and phone number +968 24343379 to discuss opportunities and arrangements.
