Manafa’a, a program specially developed and oragnsied by OAPGRC, aims to provide Oman’s entrepreneurial and scientific community with the opportunity to pitch innovative and creative biodiversity based business ideas and help transform them into viable working models. In doing so, it gives Oman’s entrepreneurs and innovators an opportunity to address the threats associated with the global biodiversity crisis through the development of new ideas, products and services.

The Manafa’a Ideathon Program is all about value-added products and services. In genetic resources, added value is usually achieved through an innovation that leads to the improvement of existing products and services, or creating new ones. Boasting a biodiversity unique in the region, Oman has a treasure trove of potential opportunities for the discovery and manufacture of value-added products.

Anyone aged above 18, who has an interest in Oman’s biodiversity and sustainable business, is invited to apply to take part in the Manafa’a program. You don’t have to be a scientist and you certainly don’t have to be a biologist, chemist, physicist or mathematician to participate!

Applicants must meet the requirements of the Manafa’a Ideathon Program as follows:
a. The applicant must be an Omani or a resident in Oman aged 18 years or over
b. Registration is allowed as part of a team from 2-5 individuals
c. The team or its individuals must not have won the previous two occasion of Manafa’a
d. The applicant must demonstrate their ability to develop the product

a. Genetic resources used must be authentic or registered in Oman
b. The proposed idea must not be subject to any intellectual property rights (IPR)
c. The idea must be new in Oman
d. The idea must be real and viable as a commercial product
e. The idea must be technically workable
f. The idea must be innovative and of quality

‌ No problem. You can register as an individual but we prefer if you joined with some-like minded folk from different majors to see what you can come up with together.

No problem. You can register as an individual and if we think you have the right skills or something special to offer, we’ll do our best to match you with some-like minded folk to see what you can come up with together.

Signing up couldn’t be easier – simply read through the rules and regulations and then register your interest at participation link before 1 August 2020.

OAPGRC periodically forms the Evaluation Committee from among the members of its scientific committees and staff. The Evaluation Committee will be responsible for:
a. First Screening: Incompatible, incomplete or unclear submissions will be excluded
b. Second Screening: The applications are filtered in term of proof of concept and patent of idea
c. Third Screening: Evaluating the team's individual skills, diversity in tasks and harmony among them Participants who passed the third screening will be approved on a priority basis, according to the logistics capacity of the program (determined periodically)

Registration isn't limited, though the program will only accept 50 people after screening to enter the 48-hour Manafa’a ideathon.

Applicants will be notified at the beginning of September about their acceptance or rejection.

Four winning teams from the 48-hour Manafa’a Ideathon will be announced at an official ceremony the day after the panel’s decision. The winning teams will receive a prize of RO2,500 (dispersed in phases).

The day following the completion of of the Manafa’a Ideathon, teams will present their commercial ideas to a panel of experts. The panel will assess the teams against pre-defined criteria. At the end of the day, the panel will submit its final decision to OAPGRC.
