Oman's geography offers a range of habitats for micro-organisms, including the extremely saline and/or hot environments of sabkhas and deserts, plus subsurface oil reservoirs. Such conditions are famous amongst microbiologists for their richness of microbial life and the existence of unique species and strains.

The application of local microbial strains could be diverse: wastewater treatment, hydrocarbon spills cleanup, dairy industry, biotechnological processing of chemicals and so on. At this time, these directions are restricted by the lack of a proper accounting system for Oman specific microbial taxa.

In order to study newly discovered organisms proper, systematic accounting and collection measures are required. Currently, OAPGRC is working on the establishment of a national micro-organism collection, with up-to-date research and computer facilities.
